The more sophisticated product thieves will actually use software to analyze your website and try to guess download locations. Now that might sound time-consuming, but all they do is set the software off at night and away it goes searching and searching - until it finds your download path.

Theft method #2. Purchasers

Now even if you've set a password on your download location, you're still vulnerable to this next line of attack.

Anyone who has already purchased your product can quite simply pass the location around to friends, family...no wait...much worse - to the whole of the internet!  And even if you stuck your download location behind a password and told your customer that password, then they can always hand that around too.

So before long, instructions to access your product will appear on one of the many "shady" newsgroups and websites that deal with circulating "WaReZ" and "CrackZ" and other file sharing websites.

That's the insider's lingo for websites and newsgroups that simply list thousands of locations to go and download software and eBooks without paying for them first. And guess what? Before long, yours will be added to those lists.

Theft method #3. Accidentally via search tools

Now even if everyone was completely trustworthy, your "Download" or "Thank-You" link will still eventually be revealed. That's because search engines will come along and search deep into your site, eventually indexing your product's download location too. Some don't even respect the "robots.txt" file that you might be running to prevent search engines from locating your download area.

Theft method #4. Buy and share

Some of the greatest theft takes place after someone has actually become your customer. They figure that since they paid for your product it would be okay by you to send their login and password details to a friend or family member. Then they presume that it would be okay to pass that on again to their friends and before you know it a dozen people are accessing your product through the same access details as your one paying customer.

And of course, the more distant the relationship from the original purchase, the worse the problem gets. Pretty soon dozens, hundreds or even thousands of individuals are helping themselves to your product -- without your knowledge or say so.  No wonder your sales haven't been what you thought they should have been lately!
